The Grab: 10.17.2007

It's hard to follow Fat Sam, apparently. Who am I kidding? Did anyone out there really think Sammy Lee had a chance at Bolton? Especially when he claimed he was going to inject his own style into the overachieving team? Octogenarian midfielder Gary Speed was handed some coaching duties, and then resigned them to "concentrate on his playing" after being left out of the side for key matches. Apparently skipper Kevin Nolan and older-than-dirt Ivan Campo didn't get along particularly well with Allardyce's former number two. We all knew Bolton were carried pretty much by Sam Allardyce, and it would take a bit more of a complicated mind to continue their success after his departure to Newcastle. Perhaps it's not fair, but how do you trust the tactical mind of a man who is a bag of cliches with a headset attached?

Bolton Wanderers part company with Sammy Lee [Times Online]

Some Three Lions fans got a beatdown in the Moscow city center leading up to England's clash with Russia at the Luzhniki Stadium. Surprisingly, the police have blamed the England supporters for drinking excessively. Police representatives stated the obvious:

"British subjects who have come to Moscow to support their team against Russia
are not acting properly. There is the feeling that they have come to drink,"
Thankfully, it's cold enough to dull the pain of taking a few bottles to the back of one's head. The Times is reporting that there are more than 5000 police, ranging from Interior Ministry troops to riot cops, to handle the clash of the expected 4500 England fans. Who says England fans' rep doesn't precede them?

England fans beaten in Moscow, say police [Guardian Football]

I don't know how many of you out there pay much attention to the NFL, but it's hard to believe this story coming from the Daily Mail. Apparently there are rich American football owners who are willing to pay England rugby star Johnny Wilkinson up to $10M a year to ply his trade in the NFL. More upsetting has to be the fact that JW makes less in a year than Chelsea and England captain John Terry makes in two weeks. I'm sure Wilkinson can make some good cash in the States, and work the accent and quads for the ladies of America, but $10M? I'm thinking more like $250K a year instead.

American football woos kicking king Wilkinson - £5m a year and no hits [Daily Mail]

Despite enjoying hearing about England's chances on a plastic pitch about once every 15 minutes for the last week, I'll be happy once the international break is over and the real, meaningful stuff starts again. Here's what to watch for this weekend (all times Eastern):

What to Watch this Weekend

Although I knew the start of the season months ago, the reality of a new campaign hit me the other day as I was browsing through the fixture list for the 1st round of this year's new Too Much Money League, the EPL.

Sure, the Copa America and the U-20s did much to satiate the appetite during the two month spell when a ball was not kicked with any meaning, but looking at this weekend's lineup of matches, I can be certain my ass will be parked on the couch, with my finger twitching on the remote.

Here's what's on tap this weekend.

Saturday, August 11
Sunderland v. Tottenham 7:30 am ET Setanta Sports
Everton v. Wigan 9:30 am ET Setanta Xtra
Bolton v. Newcastle 10 am ET Setanta Sports
West Ham v. Manchester City 10 am ET Fox Soccer Channel
Aston Villa v. Liverpool 12 pm ET Fox Soccer Channel

Sunday, August 12
Arsenal v. Fulham 7 am ET Soccer Channel
Chelsea v. Birmingham 8:30 am ET Setanta
Manchester United v. Reading 11 am ET Fox Soccer Channel

Set those DVRs and enjoy.

What to watch next year

Our favorite football Renaissance man, the Gaffer over at EPL Talk has laid out the UK TV schedule for the EPL. You'll have to determine which of the games airing on Sky will be shown on Fox Soccer Channel once Sky determines which of its channels each game will appear on.

Bravo Rio, Bravo

You'd think that Rio Ferdinand would have learned his lesson last year when he Punk'd his club 'mate Wayne Rooney. If you've forgotten, Ferdinand's prank show, Rio's World Cup Wind-Ups, ran an episode where Rooney was informed that his dog was dead, when in fact, it was not.

Hilarity ensued (Shrek didn't think it was very funny), enough so to carry on with the program. Some more of the show's choice bits:
An attempt to trap a fellow TV presenter in a lift backfired when it turned out she suffered from claustrophobia and needed medical attention, then an attempt to fool EastEnders soap hero Alfie Moon, or Shane Richie as he is known in real life, that there had been a helicopter crash in his garden was reportedly blocked by his shocked agents. The stunt kidnapping of another star of EastEnders, Dean Gaffney, also went wrong when the canny thespian realised what was going on and scarpered, just as David Beckham had during a similar prank. And that was not all.
What's next Rio, taking one of Jose Mourinho's kids in the dead of night and then telling him that the child has been put in quarantine?

What to watch this weekend

Bob's bunions really enjoyed the match

With the exception of La Liga, which looks to go down to the wire, there really isn't much to watch in terms of compelling soccer . . . unless you count the new MLS season, which I'm not.

This is the time of year when I usually eschew watching matches replayed from the last season and FA Cup finals from the 70s for, you know, a life. Well, postpone getting that life (or settle in for baseball), because we've got some Euro qualifying action coming up this weekend, with such classic matchups as Bosnia v. Turkey and the Faroe Islands v. Italy.

In addition to a few friendlies, here's what will grace our screens here in North America:

Friday, June 1
England v. Brazil 3:00 pm ET Fox Soccer Channel

Saturday, June 2
Estonia v. Croatia 2:30 pm ET Setanta PPV
Greece v. Hungary 2:30 pm ET Setanta PPV
Latvia v. Spain 2:30 pm ET Fox Soccer Channel

What If...

We had two channels broadcasting tomorrow's Champions League final? Would everyone stick with ESPN2 and Tommy Smyth's "auld onion bag?" While we might get more EPL mathces week in and week out then English, they've got the right idea on how to broadcast the final from Athens.

Why not have some options, if Martin Tyler and Andy Gray aren't doing it for you, flip on over to Clive Tyldesley and David Pleat. Derek Rae is great, but the thought of not having to listen to Smyth would sure tempt me to see what the other channel has on offer.

What's left to watch

While I'm sad to see the EPL end, especially on such an uninspiring note, we've got plenty to keep an eye on. In La Liga, what was once a league that nobody wanted to win has become the European domestic campaign to watch as it wraps up in the next three weeks. [Reuters]

And of course, in just two days time, the champions of Europe will be crowned. While both Liverpool and AC Milan may not be champions of their respective domestic campaigns, it'd be difficult to ask for a more dramatic matchup in the final, just because of what happened two years ago. World Cup winner Marcel Desailly, choosing one of two opinions to expouse, tells us it's the midfield that matters. US coverage starts from 2:30 pm ET on ESPN2. [IHT.com, Guardian Sport Blog]

Next Monday, Derby County and West Bromwich Albion will duke it out at Wembley to decide who will become the third team to go up to the Premiership and make an additional $56M for next year. Check your local listings.

Champions League v. Copa Libertadores

The case is made for the Copa Libertadores being the more "entertaining" of the two tournaments. I'm still, and might always be, more intrigued by the chess match that is a Champions League game in the competition's later stages. But I'd be more inclined to give the South American edition more love if it was readily available on TV.

Cold Hard Cash

Because of the ELP's new TV deal, the $119M on offer to this year's winner of the Championship's promotion playoff is an astonishing 50% increase from last year. Just to differentiate between the two leagues, on average, Championship sides took in about $4.4M from TV in 2005.

But don't fret over the teams that can't hack it in the Premiership in the coming seasons, they'll get an Enron-like golden parachute: close to $20M in each of the following two years. Not a bad gig if you can get it.

The Grab: 03.26

Perhaps one of the more ironic moments in England's current state of uninspired performances, the FA will announce who'll be showing FA Cup and England games for the next four years, beginning in 2008. Could ITV be the new home of FA soccer? [Daily Telegraph]

A sigh of relief or disappointment for Gooners out there? Kroenke Sports Enterprise, owned by billionaire Stan Kroenke, claims they have no interest in buying Arsenal, according to a Colorado Rapids spokesman. [BBC Sport]

Speaking of the Gunners, one of my favorite offensive players, Le Bob, wouldn't mind a return to Arsenal. Although he's currently regaining fitness from a fairly serious knee-injury, and he's hardly leaving defenders in the dust at the age of 33, I wouldn't mind seeing a little Pires ingenuity streaking into the box behind Arsenal's ineffective attack. [ITV]

Manu Adebayor and two others from Togo's national team have been told to go home after, surprisingly, a disagreement over unpaid bonuses. This marks the third time in the last year or so (that I know of) that Togo's Football Federation has had the same issue of unpaid bonuses. Adebayor up front for England? [Fox Sports Australia]

Didn't get enough soccer this weekend (I personally watched over 450 minutes of footy on Saturday and can't seem to recall anything worth mentioning)? Get ready for more Euro qualifying:
