Cleveland Browns owner Randy Lerner enjoyed his first Aston Villa game as principle owner, a 2-0 victory over Newcastle United in Birmingham. Lerner received a hero's welcome inside Villa Park, finding his seat in the director's box after flying in for the game. While Villa moved into joint-second with Everton on seven points, two points behind league leaders Manchester United, the big news today was the injury to Newcastle's $12.7M Obafemi Martins. He was carried off on a stretcher after falling awkwardly from an aerial challenge with Villa's Liam Ridgewell. While Newcastle manager Glenn Roeder said that he didn't fear that it was anything more than a painful dead-leg, Martins was seen clutching his knee before being carried off.
Newcastle had been having a hard time putting away goal-scoring opportunities and saw the midweek signing of Inter's odd-man-out as the solution. We'll just have to wait and see how he's doing when Newcastle resume domestic action against visiting Fulham a week from Saturday. Either way, my guess is that Roeder won't sleep very well tonight.
