Injury Watch: Wazza and Cris out for a while

It looks like Ligue 1 and EPL champions Lyon and Manchester United will have to deal with not only disappointment in the opening rounds of their domestic campaigns, but have suffered injury blows this week.

For French champions Lyon, the loss of Gregory Coupet to torn knee ligaments was compounded by the loss of captain Cris with a similar injury . Ironically, new gaffer Alain Perrin appointed the Brazilian defender as team captain at the beginning of this season. With the core of Lyon's backline now gone for six months, as well as the keeper until at least December, could Lyon's target of seven domestic championships in a row be in jeopardy? L'Equipe is reporting that the French club may look to Man U wantaway and former PSG player Gabriel Heinze for cover. [Yahoo! Eurosport]

Nothing scares the English more than a player clutching his foot, bringing back memories of David Beckham's ineffectual play after returning from a metatarsal fracture, as well as Wayne Rooney chilling in an oxygen chamber to speed the healing of his broken meta right before WC 2006. Well, the Wayner's out for two months, with a hairline fracture in his left foot, and Fergie's pursuit of Carlos Tevez is looking shrewder by the moment. However, there are some Red Devil fans out there who still miss Ruud van Nistelrooy and apparently don't think much of John O'Shea. [IHT.com]
