UEFA Cup, Here We Come

As far as expectations go, Bayern Munich have turned in this European season's worst performance. Just a year after completing back-to-back domestic doubles, Bayern are practically certain to end the season without silverware, and even the minimum target of third place looks increasingly out of reach, as they lie five points adrift of VfB Stuttgart with just four games to play. For the first time in a decade, the Champions League appears unlikely to feature Die Bayern.

While that's a shame for the club's supporters, the rest of the country seems to be overjoyed by Bayern's fall from grace. With a stream of players expected to be shown the door this summer (bet on Owen Hargreaves being sold to Man U), trophies might be beyond the Munich giants next season as well. I guess club president Franz Beckenbauer is right, the UEFA Cup is a competition for losers.
