See/Hear/Speak No Evil

I'm not one to blow things out of proportion, so I tread lightly on the issue of crime in South Africa. The facts are that some sort of crime takes place everyday, in every country, around the world. It is also a fact that only certain crimes get the attention of the nightly news.

What disturbs me most about this article is not the murders or robberies in and of themselves, it's the fact that South Africa's president, Thabo Mbeki, doesn't seem to be tackling the problem head on. As many of you know, Mbeki and his administration have been repeatedly accused of failing to respond adequately to AIDS and HIV in South Africa.

If the country's leader has blinders on when it comes to arguably the most devastating disease on his continent, and "out of touch" concerning violence in his country, what should visitors expect when they go to the World Cup in 2014?
