I stumbled upon the name Ferenc Puskas when I first began watching soccer years ago, and he remains both a legend of postwar European soccer and an unknown in this part of the world. Puskas was the reason and the identity of an over-achieving Maygar team and a dominant Real Madrid.
A spell with Spain after a defection from Hungary didn't stop the Hungarians from loving their footballing hero. Even now, Puskas' face can be seen throughout Budapest, kind of like Samuel Beckett in Dublin, only in a sporting sense. With his death, after a long battle with Alzheimer's, we say farewell to one of the last remnants of an old soccer world. [Times Online]
