Macca picks a Villan to shore up defence

Steve McClaren's boys will meet Israel on Saturday and Andorra just four days later, two must-win games for the Three Lions. With Wayne Bridge and Ashley Cole out, Gary Neville's ankle injury against Bolton on Saturday means that Aston Villa's Gareth Barry gets a call-up to the England squad, along with striker David Nugent from Preston North End who replaces an injured Darren Bent.

Did it really take a knock to Gary Neville's ankle to open up a spot for Barry? While Barry may not be a prototypical left-back (what does that mean, nowadays anyway?) it's a testament to Steve McClaren's small-mindedness that it took some injuries to get the Villan into the side. Alan Hansen tells us why it's do or die for Macca. [Premiership Latest, Daily Telegraph]
